Volunteer Report

November 2002

The past year has seen ten volunteers from the Friends help the Archives in a number of ways. Leila Muldrew, Vanessa Dunae, Heather Dean, Jennifer Kitching, Betty Brown and Maryanne McGrath all participated in photo re-housing projects, with most of the work being done on the Trio fonds. This large collection of glass plate negatives and prints was being stored in the photographer's original negative boxes, and was suffering from the acidity which was migrating from the boxes to the plates. The photographs document nearly fifty years of Victoria's history, as Alfred E. Crocker (known as Trio) photographed many of the military and sporting events held around town, with trips to other parts of the province and country as well. There are also portraits and photographs of homes. More than 7,000 plates have now been re-housed in acid-free envelopes and Core-plast boxes, with approximately 2,000 more plates waiting for their turn. The volunteers have also helped to identify the images and provide further description if they can, as Crocker's own notes about the subjects of the photos were cryptic.

Ron Greene has continued his work on inventorying and describing the Numismatic Collection, and will eventually be re-housing the coins, medals and tokens in appropriate mylar sleeves. The collection was last inventoried in the 1960s and the old sleeves have begun to deteriorate. The Friends have also sponsored this project by purchasing the required mylar sleeves.

Dennis Flewelling did some of the groundwork research for the on-line exhibit which celebrated the Queen's Golden Jubilee, and her visit to Victoria in October. This exhibit was very popular in the weeks leading up to the Queen's visit, with 20,000 site visits in the first week.

Terry Hunter has researched the bride ships which brought women to Victoria in the 1860s, and has identified related archival material for use in a small exhibit case in the Archives Reference Room. Once a number of conservation issues have been resolved, this exhibit will be unveiled for the amusement and education of visitors to the Archives.

And last, but not least, Leona Taylor continued to work on indexing the Dawley papers in MS-1076, in conjunction with a re-boxing by Archives staff.

Volunteering at the Archives is a wonderful opportunity to work with historical records and get a peek at some of the behind-the-scenes activities at the Archives, and a great way to help maintain and develop the province's heritage. The special event, Archives in Your Attic, on 23 November 2002, will be put on with the help of the Friends and six volunteers who have kindly stepped forward to assist with this.

There are always opportunities at the Archives for new volunteers who can contribute a regular amount of time each week. Please contact either:
