Government Records Division.

Introduction: This series consists of sketches, maps and plans

removed from record unit GR 1085 (British Columbia. Fish and Wildlife Branch). Also removed from GR 1085 was a series of reference maps documenting trapline locations and a single map of guiding territories. The reference maps have been catalouged as a separate unit and are described in finding aid CM/E117, and the map of guiding territories is under the call number CM/G6. The records in GR 1085 were transferred to the Provincial Archives from the Ministry of Environment, Prince George Region, Game Conservation Service in March, 1982.

The original filing order of the sketches, maps and plans is reflected in the series list below. The first column of the list contains the call number of each document. The second column identifies the GR 1085 volume and file in which a given item was originally stored. The third column usually provides a condensed version of the GR 1085 file title, followed by an indication of the content of the item itself. For example, the twelfth item in the list has the number CM/C2054 sh. 12. The item was removed from volume five, file seven of GR 1085 which contains records relating to various trapline files in the Finlay Forks area. This particular item is a sketch portraying the boundaries of the trapline of Jean Marie and Co. in the Manson Creek area.

Administrative Origins: The documents in this series as well as the

related records in GR 1085 were created or received by the "D" Division of the B.C. Game Commission (1922- 1957) and its successor agencies, the Fish and Game Branch (1957- 1966) and the Northern Division or Northern Region of the Fish and Wildlife Branch (1966- 1972). For most of the years covered in these records, this division/region consisted of all of British Columbia north of a line from Quesnel to Bella Coola, including these two places as well as Prince Rupert, Kitimat, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Stikine Region, Cassiar, McDames Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John and the Peace River region, the Upper Fraser valley of the McBride- Tete Jaune Cache area, the Nechako valley, the Skeena region, and the Prince George area. The records include early trapline files transferred from the B.C. Provincial Police.

Most of the records in this series relate to the registration and administration of traplines and the trapping industry. Included are numerous large- scale sketches and maps of individual traplines or trapline boundaries (1922- 1969); guiding territory maps (1948- 1972); smaller- scale maps of forest coverage, game distribution and special project areas; and a few plans of Fish and Game Branch Buildings.

Record Series: CM/S2

Name: TRAPLINE SKETCHES OF CENTRAL AND

NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA

[Title based on the title used for the related series of maps- - CM/E117- - which contains maps also removed from GR 1085. The term "sketches" was used for simplicity since the majority of the series items are sketches.]

Date Range: [1922?] - [1972?]

[These dates and those used in the creator section were NOT taken from an examination of the sheets themeselves (most of which are undated) but rather from the date ranges listed for the parent files in the finding aid for GR 1085.]

Extent: 656 sheets; sizes and scales differ.

Arrangement: Numerical, according to the number of the GR 1085 file

from which the document was removed.

Creator(s): 1922 - 1929 B.C. Provincial Police Force.

1922 - 1957 Department of Attorney General. B.C. Game Commission. "D" Division.

1957 - 1966 Department of Recreation and Conservation. Fish and Game Branch.

1966 - 1972 Department of Recreation and Conservation. Fish and Wildlife Branch. Northern Division/Region.

[The above dates reflect the dates of the records created by the various agencies and were taken from the finding aid for GR 1085. The names of the departments responible for the various wildlife agencies were obtained from the PABC Manuscripts and Government records catalogue. It has not been established which, if any, agencies existed between the department and branch levels.]

Donor: Provincial Archives of British Columbia. Manuscripts and

Government Records Division.

Introduction: This series consists of sketches, maps and plans

removed from record unit GR 1085 British Columbia. Fish and Wildlife Branch. Also removed from GR 1085 was a series of

reference maps documenting trapline locations. These reference maps have been catalouged as a separate unit and are described in finding aid CM/E117, and a single map of guiding territories.

The original filing order of the sketches, maps and plans is reflected in the item list below.
