Introduction: This draft series description covers hydrodgraphic charts
produced by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey and other official American chart- producing agencies. The charts are listed in chart number order (page 3) and are also sorted by title (page 20). Three graphic indices copied from charts in the series are reproduced at the end of the chart lists (page G1). An additional graphic index covering the Alaska and B.C. coastlines is available in the volume U.S. Coast Pilot: Alaska.... (Maps NW/623.8929/U58a/1943). The charts have been copied onto 105mm microfiche which are arranged sequentially according to the call numbers cited in the chart lists.
Scope and Content Notes: This draft description is simply intended to
provide researchers with a basic overview of the American hydrographic charts in our holdings which appear to follow a consistent chart numbering system. The boundaries of this series have not yet been clearly defined. Further research will need to be conducted before an accurate depiction of the the contents and structure of the series can be provided. Some of the dates presented should be considered tentative, since some of the charts- - particularly some from the 1850s- - may be undated reproductions of official charts. Researchers should also note that the charts listed with dates from the 1840s are 1971 reproductions of 1940s items. Background information on early American hydrographic surveying can be found in Peter J. Guthern. United States Coastal Charts, 1783- 1861 (Maps/NW/526.99/G984).
